My first exposure to on-line publications was in college. Although we always had the choice to buy textbooks in the store, many of the professors put their books online as well. Doing that would save the pupils money and allow them to access the publications from any PC in the campus. This meant that you never had to carry around your textbooks - a major advantage after a semester of trudging through the snow.
At first, I wasn't very into books on-line. I couldn't get into the experience, you see. It just did not feel right to me. I like to be able to relax with a book, holding it in my hands and flipping the pages. I could tell where things were spatially and recall the pages by their location. With the book online, you can't do any of these things. It strains your eyes, calls for you to sit up-right in the same position for hour upon hour, and is quite hard to flip your way through. I also like audio books on CD, though.
After a few years of online book reading, however, I was much more used to the technique, just like I had gotten acclimated to audio books. I had already begun to buy publications on-line for almost every purpose. I bought sports books online, textbooks online - you think of it. Not only did the net allow me to buy printed publications inexpensively, but it also allowed me to access many things that were out of print.
Reading books online isn't really that good for modern literature which you can buy in the store. You may as well either buy it or take it out of the library, or listen to it, with books on cd. The cool thing about publications online, however, is that you may often find quite old ones with very little trouble. Resources such as Project Gutenberg allow you to access the great classics of literature from all places and times around the globe. As long as it's no longer copy-protected, you can legally put the publication online.
Of course, the area where books online have the greatest benefit of all is with audio publications. The great thing about audio publications on-line is that it's so much more convenient than having to take them out of the library or go to an audio publication shop. Instead, you can simply down-load them to your PC and listen to them at your leisure. If you want to take them with you, you can put them on an iPod or put them on CD. Audio publications on-line make a lot of sense.
