Small Breed Dog Crate Training
Exactly why dog lovers hold this preconceived belief that small breed puppies are more hard to train than medium sized or larger dogs, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should not be problematic.
Small dog training, is not different from training a puppy dog of any other larger sized breed. Whereas training any pup will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, most all other aspects remain the same, and the technique to training the dog should be the same, regardless its size.
Never the less, I will grant an allowance here, and accept that small dog training may pose problems in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Even so, this is not because the fact that it is a small breed dog, but in all case studies, because of the owner.
If a smaller breed puppy dog is aggressive and cannot be disciplined, or if a small breed puppy cannot be potty trained or poses difficulties in being crate trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this dilemma. Let us analyze how and why.
Aggression.
Smallish dogs are liked because they are cute, they are like toys. Owners enjoy having their pet sit on their laps. This specific indulgence is where the problem gets going. The basic aggressive character of the dog, is to claim ownership over its domain, its food, even its master; all canines strive to be the alpha dog.
It is the ruthless streak in the pup that provokes it to place itself on the lap of its owner, above all when there are a number of people gathered in the room.
This is a outright act of ruthlessness. Instead of reprimanding the pup, every owner with the exception of none, would fondle the dog, although it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, developing the aggressive streak in the puppy. In this way the owner has seconded the pup's instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting mad at a a bigger size dog is another blatant act of aggression. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is viewed as cute, mainly because one dog is very small while the other is large. Most owners shower affection on the pooch instead of admonishing it, when it demonstrates this aggression against a larger dog.
The above are but instances as to why small size breed pups are aggressive, and not because small dog training is very difficult.
Crate Training
Owners are inclined to carry their small dogs around no matter where they are, even while they are at home and that makes it very difficult to toilet train them
It is, as if by instinct that the owners of smallish breed dogs to cart the animal to the area where the dog should do its dirty business and then carry it back into the house.
It is this routine of carrying the pup to the place where is should do its business that is the root of all roadblocks. In addition, because the pup is as a general rule carried around all the time it has no way of it indicating to or alerting the owner that it has to poop.
Small dog training starts with treating the dog as any other sized dog. They have to be shown their toilet area on a leash. If owners cease carrying their miniature breed dogs they would be very successful in training them.
